Excellent German deli, neighborhood fixture since I can remember (and I've lived in the area for all of my 30 years), and one of my favorite lunch spots in the vicinity. The house-smoked sausages and meats are very, very good. They also sell some nice marinades and rubs.
The sausages are seriously some of the best around, and the reuben and smoked turkey sandwiches are also highly recommendable. Sandwich and a German pickle will set you back around $7.
Good place to pick up something for the grill, or a quick lunch. Even when they're crowded they move the orders through at a nice clip. I've really never gone wrong here.

We tried Whole Foods, Draegers, and Andronicos to get a Pork Picnic Shoulder Roast, bone in/skin on. On a whim, we rang up Dittmers. Success. Great Meat selection. I was also expecting to pay a lot for the cut (traditionally a cheap cut) but the price was about 13 bucks for a 6 pound roast. Cheap as chips! Cooked it for about 7 hours in my Big Green Egg (could have gone longer, but folks were getting hungry). The skin crackled up nicely for the most part. I will definitely hit up Dittmers for all my butcher shop needs.

So last year I went though a ton of sneaky maneuvers to get a business trip to Germany in time for Oktoberfest.
I went through all the nonsense....phony customers, bullshit justifications, approvals, and of course, as usual, I got my way.
So, I arrived in Germany in October.
Just in time for Oktoberfest.
Which is in.
September.
Thanks for jamming me up Germany.
Regardless, my bavarian buddies are still close to my heart so from time to time, I like to get a taste of Germany by going to Dittmer's.
This place is great. You got weiners brats wursts and krauts.
It's pretty much the only sausage party you'll find me at.
No seats inside so be prepared to eat outdoors unless you get it to go.
Spargle.

Just found out about this place and I gotta tell you, I think I'm hooked. Had the ruben with pastrami and the works for lunch and after immediate food inhalation I sank into a deep food coma the likes of which sweet sweet food porn dreams are made of. I also picked up some of those little pepperoni sticks you normally stray away from at the quickie mart but these were pure bliss. I promise to never go on another fishing trip without them cradled near my busom. The only knock I have is that my sandwich was kind of small for $7.00 but the taste was spot on. Need to go back to try their vast selection of meats and such but as of now I'm digging it.
Good turkey. The butcher's section is always super crowded, so I guess the sausages are really good.
They were out of dutch crunch, so I had to get my turkey avocado on a sweet roll, which was okay, but dutch crunch would've been better.
Service was really friendly - I'll be back to try other sandwiches.
The sandwiches here are not made with love. The sausages may be great, but the people making the sandwiches just don't give a d___. My garlic sausage sandwich was so wet that it was dripping. It had way too much mayo too. My husband got the pastrami on rye and the bread was too thin and there was more sauerkraut than pastrami - isn't it a pastrami sandwich not a sauerkraut sandwich! The price was about $6.50 which is not bad but not put together well. On the good side there is hariboo candy there.

I have been going to Dittmer's since about 1985, and I think it's the best Meat Market and Deli in the South PA and Mtn View area, hands down!
I usually get a smoked turkey sandwich on wheat, with everything, but sometimes their daily special looks so good, I've gotta get it! Their Rueben, BLT and Liverwurst sandwiches are delicious.
The service is usually quick and very friendly. Prices are very fair for the quality and they have some shaded outdoor seating too, which is nice.
I used to live in the countryside of eastern Pennsylvania, with the Amish people and farms. I loved the farmer's markets and butcher shops that I could visit regularly. Since moving out to Cali, I have yet to find a butcher shop that came close to what I had experienced....that is until I found Dittmer's. The shop is small, but it has all the necessities. Smoked meats, ham hocks, livers, lovely butchered cuts of pork, beef and chicken. The sausages looked fabulous and they had quite a selection. They also had some packed bacon and smoked trout too. I was so overwhelmed. I couldn't believe the very thing I was missing was sitting right under my nose!! No offense to Whole Foods and their organic, grain fed, meats, but nothing beats a good German butcher shop, there's just something much more homey about it.
The sandwiches are also delicious. They use the best cold cuts (comes right from the cold case) and have all the fixins. The pork with sauerkraut with german mustard is soooo good. Love this place. I'll be back for sure, especially when I'm feeling homesick for the simple life in the countryside.

God I love sausage. This is the sausage factory - the best damn place for thick, juicy meat. I can't help but salivate and put it in my mouth....

It just doesn't get any better than Dittmer's. Steaks and sandwiches are the BEST quality and the staff is more than happy to customize any cuts of meat upon request. I'm a hunter and I use Dittmer's to smoke all of my wild meat - it can be a bit pricey, but it's worth it when I share venison sausage with friends and family.
Maybe the best aspect of Dittmer's is the aroma that hits you as you enter the market. If you haven't been, you're missing out!
By fa the best local deli with the awards to prove it. Immpecible sandwiches and the best thick-cut bacon ever to croos my lips. A must try!!
Good quality meats and cheese. You gotta love a place like this, old world sausages and meats. Many old time customers patronize this restaurant. A better selection of bread would be nice. Little on the expensive side but its worth it.
L'Inferno for vegans. Dante would write many cantos about the piles of ham hocks, duck legs and all the other gorgeous, glistening meat parts. The man behind the counter gave me so many tastes that I can barely finish my roast pork and smoked cheddar sandwich. He was most proud of the smoked turkey he gave me a taste of, but that'll have to wait to next time....and there will be many more. This place is incredible.
I am friends with the owners and Dittmer is a good man and his son mark is a good guy they are always very welcoming and I also enjoy talking to the rest of the staff the girls always make my sandwhich delicious. The garlic sausage is good and also the chicken salad sandwhich is good. I warn you, you will come out smelling like smoked meat .
Being a Wisconsin German this place is a godsend. Hallelujah! Fantastic meat, sausage, & cheese selection. Sandwiches with EVERYTHING on them and a wonderful little selection of German/European groceries. I LOVE THIS PLACE I LOVE THIS PLACE!
Dittmer's carries several dozen kinds of smoked meats and sausages displayed in a 30 foot long deli case. Each is labeled and if they are not busy someone will tell you about the ones you have never heard of. There is a narrow walkway to the back of the store with shelves laden with German and European delicacies along the wall opposite the deli case. It is back to belly when a crowd is there. Seating is on picnic tables outside.
We like kassel ripschen and they will cut your smoked pork chops to order. They smoke all their own meats and the store has a smoky odor.
Their Westphalian ham is unique for the Bay Area. Where else can I buy this dry cured and smoked delicacy sliced thin as paper?
The only bad experience I've had with their meat is some brats I may have mis-cooked since they came out of the beer and onions a bit on the mushy side. They have several varieties of bratwurst so I might have picked the wrong one to prepare in that way.
We have not had a sandwich there. But as a butcher shop I know of no other with as wide a variety of tempting products.
If you need German-style smoked meats, speciality sausages, veal steaks, ground lamb, duck, or venison (I have even found frozen buffalo in the freezer at the back of the store.) you can get it at Dittmers.
ugh the meat at this place is some prime, top notch deliciousness. The sandwiches, my god the sandwiches. And then the sausages and brats. Man.

I love the selection of meats. If you've never been, do yourself a favor and go!
I have been a customer for over 20 years their meats are better than Draegers and 30% less. Great place for sandwiches. Dittmer is a great guy. His tips on how to prepare different recepies are most helpful.
I like cows...... but if someone is going to sell me a part of one.........it's these guys.
I have been coming here since before I could stand at the counter.
My Mom sends me here before every trip to her house far far away.
I bet she regrets moving because she misses Dittmers.
I must say I have come here for many of my meat needs and only once were they unable to help me, but then again after further research what I was looking for was outlawed.
Great family team and great product.
Just remember if you eat my friend the cow get her here.

Damn, this place is one of the few places that makes me bummed I don't eat beef or pork much anymore. Probably the best meat selection/quality in the state. Their sandwiches are top 5 i've ever had, they have a massive selection of haribo candies and the german meat guy rules. There is a reason this is the highest rated place in mountain view/palo alto on yelp. Fantastic all around.

They have not only the best Sausages in The Bay Area, but also the best Beef Jerky!
I love it, I love it, I love it...
Right after we stopped at Esther's Bakery we went here.... It was 8:20am and they usually open at 8:30... The butcher saw me standing outside waiting.. he just opened the door and let me in... hehe
Once I was inside.. it was like Christmas and Halloween at the same day! They had everything~~~~ German side dishes... candies... beer... cheese....
The butcher saw me getting all those things and asked me if I am from Germany... (since I don't look German at all)... and we started talking in German... (so nice to speak with natives).. He gave me some samples (gave me soooo much!!!!)...
Great customer service... Great products.... very fresh and delicious!!!..
My maiden name is Dietrich, I'm from German decent and my great grandfather was a butcher. Let's just say I know my German meats.
These guys have the best sausage and brats in the Bay Area. Hands down.
Man, I love my people.

Ok so normally i'd dock a point for the so so service from the lady's in the sandwhich section. But the guys in the meats section service is pretty good so i'll have to break even this time.
Without getting to fancy, this place sausage rocks. I have yet to try one that i don't like. The selection is amazing, the only fear i have is living within 15 miles of here and making this a regular visit until i get a heart attack.
The sandwhiches can use better bread but i'm starting to think that's a common problem in this area. Where does one get fresh bread up here? But for the price, time, and quality it's still a great sandwhich place.
I love you guys and i'd give you 5 stars but the bread issue needs to be addressed.

If you've never eaten smoked duck breast I highly recommend you stop by Dittmer's and pick one up. They do it and they do it well. Try it thinly sliced with a nice piece of crusty bread, a dab of stone ground mustard and sliver of gruyere. You won't be sorry!

not a bad place to shop ,although i was treated rudely when mentioning a competitor ,who was nice enough to send me to them for what i needed
150 review, 4.5 star average, why should I even bother to write anything here? I mean if you're not already planning to go what could I do to change your mind?
Don't just go for a sandwich though, lots of these reviews would make you think it's a sandwich shop but it's sooooo much more. Their sausages are tops, particularly their double smoked varieties (the landjaeger and Louisiana hot are beyond great). Their fresh meat is fantastic and after reading some other reviews apparently I have to get a smoked duck breast.
Hmm, I'm hungry, must be lunch time. I know where I'm going for lunch.
After 15+ years it boils down to this which is as follows
My De Lux Dettmers's Sandwich is
Dutch Crunch
Meat 1/2n1/2 Ham & Roast Pork
Cheese 1/2&1/2 Swiss & Smoked Cheddar
With everything including German Mustard
The meat combo complement each other one is a little salty and the other needs a little,Same with the pairing of the cheese one is a almost too smoky and the other plain. The peperchini's and german mustard are a must. This sandwich will make Mountain View Famous someday.
FYI Dittmer is the Dad and Son Mark is the entertainment and the Meat Meister(If you not sure just ask and he will prescribe the cooking times and methods for your success). Also order your Turkey's (Free range organic) early. Like around Halloween when you go in for the fixing's for autums first stew(Split Pee w/ smoked ribs and Beef Stew and/or Goulash they sell the seasoning packets too) and don't forget pot roast for the freezer (Dont worry if it looks too big it wont last after you pull it out of the oven, And if your lucky enough to have left overs you'll get to try it in a sandwich, Then you and your loved ones will be so glad you bought the biggest one.)
If your grilling try the sausages the Spicy Jalopeno Cheedar requires two only cause you wont get over the happyness of the first one. And the Chicken Potabello is Smooth . Also burgers out of the prepared meatloaf will do a vanishing act.
EnJoy the last of the Old World.

Actual conversation at work:
Me to co-workers: where do you guys want to go for lunch? I'm thinking of Dittmer's...
Guy co-worker: hmmm, I think I'll go to Quizno's...only because I get a free sandwich
Girl co-worker: I'll go with you, haven't had it in awhile...
Guy co-worker: you know what, I'll join you guys...I can always get my free sandwich later...
And that, my friends, is how great Dittmer's sandwiches are; even a free sandwich couldn't tempt you to pass them up!!!
This place is the spot to go for great tasting sandwiches during the lunch time. Yeah, none of that Subway/Quizno's crap they call a sandwich for me anymore!!
I usually would get either a chicken salad, tuna salad, or liverwurst on wheat or dutch crunch bread. Soooooo freakin' good! And the sandwiches are big...well, at least to me they are. So they usually serve as lunch and afternoon snack for me. =P
Oh and the fact that it's only a 2-minute walk from my office deserves an extra star!
If you have the money and you want good quality meats, this is the place. I came during a rare time where there were only 2 people ahead of me. I didn't order a sandwich like most of the other reviewers did.
Instead, I purchased a rib eye steak for my luv and I to enjoy for the evening plus bratwurst for the morning. It was one of the best steaks we've ever had! Even better than some restaurants we've been to.
I don't usually give 5 stars but this is exceptional and my place to go for special occasions. Perfectly located nearby Milk Pail (where you can pick up your fruits, veggies, and cheese).
I'd like to express my undying love for Dittmer's.
I originally came here for a German class project to practice ordering food in German. After actually buying their Louisiana Hot Link sandwich (or whatever it's called) I was hooked.
Now whenever I come here all I can say is, "Nom nom nomnomnom."

Get yo meatz here!!!
How have I lived in the area all my life and never known about Dittmers? I don't know, but it happened. True story.
In honor of 'spring forward', we had our first BBQ this wkd, what better way to celebrate than with some meats from Dittmers?!?!?! Any opportunity to head over there and I am on it. Some friends served up tasty meats from here last summer and we've been going back ever since.
This place is a sausage factory, literally....as someone else already pointed out. They make their own, so try them ALL. We are about 1/2way through the options.
So far our fave is the paprika smoked sausage and also the jalapeno cheddar is a new fave. Their Santa Maria tri-tip is requested at almost all parties we throw. Didn't know they had Santa Maria marinated hangar steak as well, next time.
I love getting their smoked chicken breast, and using it to make sandwiches and quesadillas for us during the week. Their frankfurters....fabulous. I am not a hot dog fan but these are amazing. I recommended the frankfurters to a friend who was hosting her son's 2nd birthday recently and they were the biggest hit of the party (well besides the cupcakes of course).
Get there, take a #...and wait. It can be 2 minutes or 20 minutes on Saturdays. Downer is they are not open Sundays so you have to plan ahead if you want to BBQ on a Sunday. I can't tell you how many Sunday afternoons I am like *#!&#....I want some Dittmers and we instead get pizza.
In the land of super corporate markets that pepper our Bay Area landscape serving up organic, free-range, and tofu-friendly...Dittmer's Meat is an old-school refreshing breath of pork-filled air. They also make sandwiches, but I work nowhere near here so will probably never try their lunchie offerings, so sad.
Oh and while you wait...check out all their yummy packaged goodies along the wall in the tiny shop. Funny breads, cheeses, spaetzle and German dessert mixes. Every Ritter Sport known to man??
I feel like I need a Paxil every time I come here because my brain kicks into overdrive. Must. Try. Everything.

Meat loaf mix, sausages, smoked: chicken-pork chops-trout-cheeses, venison, rabbit, ground lamb! Breads, chocolates, pepperoni! A bit of the old world right across from Sears between the tire store and a bank! Go. Eat good food. Don't forget to get a number and preorder around the holidays.
my husband and i pick up sandwiches here every once in a while...sandwiches are good, but they could stand to get some better dutch crunch.
1) Some good choice of meat, but be ready to pay a ridiculous price. Paid $58 for 16oz NY steak for two & 8 oz rib eye. The guy actually added insult to injury when he found smart to tell me "it's fresh beef"
2) Germany is to charcuterie what china is to wine

I don't know what to say. Everything here has been fantastic, whether it was the chicken, beef, pork, lamb, cold cut turkey, or fresh sandwiches.
I think the only negative is that their chip selection isn't consistent. If that's my only complaint about a butcher & sandwich shop, I'm not really complaining!!!!
Decided to make some Gumbo for the Super Bowl, er sorry "The Big Game." Lets be clear, making Gumbo isn't picking up a box of Zatarain's at Safeway and throwing in a couple of pieces of organic free range chicken from Whole Foods...it's whippen up a good'ol soup stock from scratch, fresh rouge and authentic meats that make it a Cajun masterpiece.
My recipe mixes seafood (crab + shrimp) and meat (chicken + andouille) and takes 2 days to prepare. Dittlmer's is the only place west of Lake Charles that sells Andouille sausage worth spending time to put the rest of the ingredients together. The other meats are that worthy as well...is it made from antibiotic free, shade grown pigs? I have no f*ing idea, but it rocks.
They also carry a bunch of German food stuffs and bonus points for knife sharpening once a month. My Wusthoff appreciates the fine Tuetonic tuning.

I've been to Dittmer's twice; once for a sandwich, once for tasso and andouille. The sandwich, corned beef, was good and the accompanying potato salad was as well. A previous reviewer who raved about their andouille and tasso was right on. I've been making gumbo and jambalaya for years and this place makes some of the best andouille and tasso I've had. The batch of gumbo I made with it was one of my best yet and I attribute it to the aforementioned a&t, although the perfectly dark roux helped.
Some reviews had some sanitary concerns, specifically with employees making sandwiches after handling money using the same gloves. Both times I was there I watched for that. Each time the person taking money changed gloves before returning to food handling.

This place is overrated. I've been here for lunch a few times and it's always a hassle and the food is mediocre. Maybe I don't order the right things, but I shouldn't have to. The La Salsa chain up the street is a superior experience.
