I just went and got my teeth cleaned at a different dentist in the same office building as Dr. Velasco and it made me miss his office even more. Boo hoo! Too bad I had to switch because my insurance won't cover Dr. Velasco anymore. I have referred a coworker to him as well and she is stronger than me and is willing to take the bullet and pay. I just look forward to open season when I can go back and start looking forward to my dental visits.
I like the fact that he has a website too. Makes searching for dentists much easier!
Only dentist that I've liked since leaving the one I saw growing up. Read below for more details, I pretty much agree with all of the positive reviews.

Dirty mouth? Chew Ortbitz gum?
No, visit Dr. Jeremy Velasco.
I visited Dr. Velasco right after getting my braces off with a lesser, more unprofessional office (in keeping with the Orbitz theme let's call my old dentist Dr. Stinky Mc Stinkface.) So it was definitely a breath of fresh air dealing with an office as kind, courteous and professional as Dr. V's.
From the first phone call to the actual visit itself; his staff was genuinely kind, sweet and accommodating. I barely broke open my magazine and they were already calling on me to start my cleaning. I commented on the nice-ish view and the doctor quipped "Ya, through the chicken wire glass" in a professional, yet friendly manner. On top of being very knowledgeable, he's quite a nice, funny guy.
Upon my exit, he surprised me with a goodie bag including a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and the like.
I strongly recommend visiting Dr. Velasco, I guarantee he'll make you smile.

I had an emergency tooth issue and called Dr. Velasco's emergancy number on Labor Day. The Doc was out of town at a BBQ and still answered the phone, and set me up with an emergency appointment during his break the very next day. I went in, he figured out how to fix the problem, and had me in and out of his office within the hour, no waiting at all. The office is clean, great views out the window, and his staff is legit, polite, and knows what they are doing. I found my new dentist. This guy is siiiiiiiic. Props to yelp for the referal...
I can see why Dr. Velasco has a perfect score on Yelp! I have never been in such a professional (yet friendly) dental office. Everyone I met, from the receptionist to the hygenist to the doc himself, shook my hand and greeted me with such a friendly attitude. It almost make me look forward to my cleaning (almost!...but not quite, as I hate the dentist any time I have to go). Both my husband and I found Dr. Velasco after moving to SF, and we both agree he does great work. Getting an appointment was super easy, too, even for a new patient.

The nicest, most personable dentist I've had! (Ok, maybe my orthodontist is up there with Dr. Velasco, but that was YEARS ago). I'm not the first to jump at going to see the dentist....I've always hated and feared them. But I'd have to say, Dr. V and his entire staff were very friendly and not intimidating at all. They value your business and make you feel as comfortable as possible. On my first visit I had a full mouth of x-rays taken and a good teeth cleaning. So sad to say, I had one cavity and was diagnosed with a root canal that had to be re-done. On my second visit, Dr. V fixed my cavity...I was in and out in less than an hour, pain free, but still had that numbing sensation in my mouth.
I was completely satisfied with Dr. V's and the rest of the staff's work and professionalism. With almost 15 years of experience (even though he still looks very young), it's safe to say Dr. V delivers quality work. The office is part of a building of medical offices, so it might be a little confusing when finding it for the first time. If you do drive, the closest parking lot is the Union Square lot. If you don't want to pay, hope on the Geary 38.
[Side note: Yay! My 100th review!!!]

The service was fine, no major complaints I can say. The attitude should be more professional, rather than commerical.
A friend from another country had to get emergency work done on his teeth and had no insurance. Dr. Velasco was able to squeeze him within a couple hours and charged him a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

For the past 15 or so years, this has been my plan for going to the dentist:
1) Avoidance at all costs
2) Get dental insurance, if no insurance, revert to #1
3) Consult yelp for dentists, since the thought of the dentist brings on a mild case of PTSD.
After reviewing...reviews, I also consulted Dr. Velasco's website to get a better feel of how he runs things. When I saw that he did his undergrad at the University of Nevada, (not Ne-VAW-da), Reno- I was hooked (GO PACK!). So I called to make my appointment, and although it was a couple of weeks away, that didn't bother me because I was in no hurry (see #1).
He's awesome, his staff is really nice, and I even like his building with it's old movie feel- I'm expecting one of the doors to have the name of a private investigator and a silhouette of a buxom woman behind a frosted glass door.
I am going to stick with my 5 stars, although I wasn't thrilled about the woman who took the second set of x-rays. Oh well, my Red Sox won last night, there's only so much luck I can get in a day.

Since I got a gold crown on my last visit, I will be referring to him as Dr. Bling Bling going forward. He is a super dentist. I hadn't been to a dentist in a number of years and I'm generally afraid of them. I knew it was time to go though because my tongue just kept on feeling that one tooth. You know what I'm talking about! So, of course I came to Yelp to find a top rated dentist who would treat me right. I was pleased to arrive in person and find that Dr. Bling Bling and his office staff are all just as friendly as can be. Having been several times now, I even feel comfortable walking in. I am so happy to go now that I have even scheduled my next cleaning for my birthday. Yes, he is that good. I am going to the dentist on my birthday! And when I smile really BIG or laugh really LOUD you might even spot my gold crown. Gold is really holding its value these days so I am hedging my bets that one day that puppy is going to pay off my house! :)
Dr. Jeremy is absolutely amazing! After a couple of months of looking for a dentist, I decided to search on Yelp and lo and behold I stumbled on Dr. Jeremy. The reviews were so great that I made an appointment and immediately loved it.
Although it took me three months (yes, three months) to get my first appointment it was worth it! The staff is very professional and Dr. Velasco is extremely attentive and genuinely cares about his patients. He is very BIG on flossing...so FLOSS!
Well, with all these 5 star reviews must be he's an amazing dentist. But if his office won't return my calls, there's no way I can add to them.
I called two weeks ago and spoke to one of the admin staff. She was on another call and asked if she could call me back in 5 minutes. I waited 5 days. I thought that maybe she's written my number down incorrectly so I called again. This time there was no response (I called during normal business hours) so I left a message asking for a callback. I slowly said my number twice. No callback.
My final attempt was about a week ago. Again I left a message (even though I called during normal hours) and again left my number twice and said it very slowly. Still no callback.
Dr. Velasco may be a wonderful dentist but the staff are letting him down and I have to be the bad guy who gives him his first less than stellar review. Why do I feel guilty about this?

let me spit a review for y'all I wrote, almost 2 years ago...
TWO YEARS AGO, I found this amazing dentist who was really cool and very professional. He didn't make any wisecracks about the amount of cavity and buildup I had in my mouth... so I was totally at ease when he busted out the "CAVITRON" to break up the plaque. I thought, "DANG it's THAT BAD?". Yes, it was THAT bad that the cleaning took twice the average time. Can you just imagine how embarrassed I was about the gravity of my dental non-hygiene? My mouth felt soo roomy afterwards. That was the cleanest cleaning I ever had (as in... not a lot of blood and particles spewing all over my face). If you ever read this Dr. Velasco--I FLOSS NOW (so hopefully you don't have to take the CAVITRON out!)
Then they took like 18 X-rays of my teeth. That was no fun, but I guess it was necessary since I did not have any previous dental records. Yes! --this was very useful since we live in San Francisco... so JUST IN CASE, my body will now be identified through my dental records!
I feel bad because I canceled my morning appointment, then later changed my mind to have it done in the afternoon. He and his staff were cool enough to squeeze me in on the last minute (though be warned, last-minute cancellations is subject to some sort of fine... which they waived for me coz it was my first visit and maybe because they sympathized with me being drenched from the rain).
------
TWO YEARS LATER, I've been back for the 4th time for my regular cleaning. Since I've been flossing more, he hasn't had too much trouble cleaning my teeth. He exclaimed that I have "great teeth, but you salivate too much" (*suction* *suction*). Supposedly, producing too mats saliva can render me more susceptible to building plaque because it contains dissolved minerals that could build up on my teef. I just have to make sure I pay more attention to my lower back teeth, which are located closest to major salivary glands. He tells me also that some dentists give pills to people with overactive salivary glands to minimize salivation, but he doesn't roll like that. Uhm, it's okay.
I prefer spittin' anyway.

I agree with anyone who loves this man- he's the best dentist that I have ever had. Granted, I have only been to three dentists since the age of four, but he is AMAZING. After finding him on Yelp and trekking over to Union Square, which is a strange place to go to the dentist, I sat down in that magical dentist chair. Even though I hadn't been to a dentist in over two years, the man still tells me I have beautiful teeth. However, as much as I love flattery, it won't buy you a good review.
My satisfaction stemmed from his extraordinary attention to detail and friendliness. Honestly, he didn't have to be that nice- he's just that good. But, he was. And, how often does one come across a dentist that does the hygienist stuff himself?
My teeth left the office shiny and pretty, and attached to them was one happy customer.
I'd give this man 6 stars if I could.

My old dentist dropped the ball, got too busy water skiing and buying timeshares in Costa Rica - or whatever dentists do with their 'free time'/ disposable income - and forgot about me...so before my teeth started falling out, i turned to Yelp to try to locate a new dental professional in SF...i was a little sketch, as it was the first time i'd ever relied on this goofy website for anything semi-important (like personal health/ hygiene).
When I arrived for my appointment, he had the Oakland A's game on the radio, playing throughout the office. Turns out the guy's a season ticket holder for a long time - and he even turned the volume of the radio UP so I could hear it over the noise he was making cleaning my teeth...
He was finishing up as the rookie Suzuki came to bat in the 10th, and he stopped what he was doing so we both could listen to the walk-off call. We both exchanged a knuckle bump before i rinsed and paid up...
Pretty much the best dental experience I've ever had by a long shot.
Needless to say, I'm sold. This guy is my new dentist.

I've been Dr. Velasco's patient for around four years. He's warm, open, and friendly, and you don't feel that weird "I am a DOCTOR and you are a patient" feeling that so many other doctors give off. Dr. Velasco explains your options to you, he runs on time, and if your teeth are in good shape and you're getting a regular 6-month cleaning you're in and out in an hour! Park in the lot underneath Union Square or take the MUNI or BART to Powell St station and walk up Powell to Post. You can also take the cable car up Powell and hop off at Post if you're really opposed to walking.
I've referred many friends and co-workers to him; whenever someone says they have a toothache or they're scared of the dentist or it's been sooo long since they've been to a dentist, I always give them Dr. Velasco's card and say, "He's the best dentist I've ever had." Everyone I've referred has had a good experience!
The assistants, hygienists, and Sakiko the office manager are similarly friendly and awesome, and the office is clean and sort of beachy feeling, in a building ten feet above Union Square.
Dr. Velasco and staff have taken my teeth from clean and healthy to really beautiful-- gradually, as each of my fillings needed to be replaced, since they've been there since childhood, he changed them to the composite (white) type of fillings that match the teeth. Once all my fillings had been replaced, I got Zoom! whitening, which was done by Ling, one of the dental assistants. She is awesome, and the Zoom! process was easy. I watched a movie while it was being done. Before, my teeth were nice, they were healthy, they're for chewing, whatever. Now, I love my teeth! But you have to ask for these cosmetic things, if you want them, because Dr. Velasco does not try to upsell his patients. "Healthy teeth are beautiful teeth, " he says, "That's the important thing."

My old dentist was the worst. After moving to SF and searching for a new one, I decided to go with the top rated dentist on yelp. Dr. Velasco and his staff really know how to take care of you. They are kind, efficient, and helpful the whole way through. The paperwork is a breeze and you don't have to wait long. The cleaning was a walk in the park compared to my old dentist. Dr. Velasco answered all my questions, gave me some pointers on my brushing and flossing, and really went that extra mile for me. Maybe it was because I mentioned Yelp? ;) I am actually looking forward to my next cleaning.

Dr. Velasco is fabulous!
I had a dental emergency (my bonding broke off my FRONT TOOTH) and I looked like a crazy crackhead! I have NO dentist in SF and NO dental insurance and his great receptionist was able to fit me in immediately! The doctor is really nice and really sweet and totally walks you through everything he's gonna do so you're not freaked out, and his rates are REALLY reasonable. My smile looks better than it did before the bonding broke off in the first place! I was so wow-ed that I made an appointment to go back! My mouth is still numb, but it looks great!
Highly recommended!

Dr. Jeremy seems like a cool dude. My brother needed to get his wisdom teeth taken out and asked me if I could find somewhere. The first place I went to was Yelp and found Dr. Jeremy's office. Good thing too.
My brother called a week in advance and was able to get an appointment without any problem. We arrived there on time and Dr. Jeremy knew who we were immediately. The attention the staff gave us was great. The waiting area is a bit cramped (at one point, a staff member's high school relative was there with her friend and they were loud) but this place still deserves five-stars for service.
I'm so impressed with their service that I scheduled my next cleaning appointment for myself.

I'm kinda wigged out about Dentists/Doctors/etc. in general, and I don't have dental insurance. So I hadn't been checked out in a couple years. But when I had a broken tooth I went for the top-rated dentist on Yelp. Dr. Velasco and his staff made me totally comfortable, and took care of the problem quickly. I had hardly any wait and my teeth look a lot better!
I am in shock over how fantastic this dentist is.
He is so nice. He makes you feel incredibly comfortable. And wow, does he know what he's doing.
So, apparently I had some minor stainage due to too much wine-drinking (yes, I had noticed this, and it was driving me insane). He busted out this sandblasting "jet" (no lie, sand flew everywhere - kind of like microdermabrasion for the teeth) and, presto, perfect and pearly and stain-free. My mouth has never felt better.
I am actually looking forward to my next cleaning. Is that crazy or what!

I am the queen of procrastination. Trust me on this --- I OWN that crown.
I am especially good at putting off visits to various medical professionals. I usually wait until catastrophe rains down and then scurry to the appropriate specialist for assistance and succor. So when I unexpectedly cracked a tooth last week I took it as a sign that it might, possibly, after a few years here in the fair city, be time to find a dentist.
I of course turned to Yelp for assistance. After a truly nasty experience over the weekend with another dental office I called Dr Jeremy Velasco's office. From the moment his staff answered the phone I knew I was in good hands. Sukiko was able to fit me in on the day I requested (no mean feat when I was giving less than 48 hours notice) and she made me feel as if I was valued and needed --- and I hadn't even walked through their doors yet!
Dr. Velasco and his tiny staff were the epitome of friendly professionals. I felt as if I had been going to this dentist for years instead of being a first-timer. With such a small office and team it could get chaotic, but they have obviously developed an efficient and smooth routine that allows for paperwork, chitchat, full mouth X-rays, cavity checks, a new filling and taking a picture --- all in about an hour. And Dr. Velasco saw another patient in that time too! It all makes sense when I discovered that his staff has been with him since the practice first opened 9 years ago. That says a lot.
So yes, I will be going back...and yes, I will be going back SOON. I promise. Really. Don't give me that look.
UPDATE: 7/27/07
Having been a patient of Dr Velasco's now for six months, I can safely say it is not a fluke. He's fantastic! And if you haven't jumped on his train...hurry! He's getting really busy.

As everybody mentioned, the dentist is very nice and cheerful. The staff is also nice and one of the staff speaks Japanese. That's a big plus for me. She told me that Dr. Velasco bought a Japanese dentistry office where he has the business now and a half of the employees. Dr. Velasco speaks a little bit of Japanese. I just wish that it would be much easier to set up an appointment. He's too popular sometimes. Oh, he happens to be my friend's distant cousin!
If I could give him 10 stars, I would.
My day did not start so well. First, I lose my MUNI pass, and at 5 minutes before I have to leave, I realize I have no deniro for the bus -- only a $20 bill. After spending 15 minutes emptying pockets, uncovering cushions, and overturning boxes, I piece together $1.50 in change. Then I wait for the 5 Fulton. And wait. And wait. One passes, and it's full. Seeing that my appointment is only 15 minutes away and knowing that I need more time as a new patient, I bite the bullet and walk to Divis to catch a cab. Thus all my last minute scrambling for change was in vain. I arrive 10 minutes late, flushed, hot, and sweaty. The kindly receptionist addressed me by name and handed me the forms to fill out. Then Dr. Velasco came into the waiting room, introduced himself to me as "Jeremy" and apologized for keeping ME waiting.
Dr. V is young, funny, cool, and jokes around w/you so much you forget why you're there -- scraping, cleaning, and other unpleasantries. My mouth was not in great shape, but he spared me the lecture on dental hygiene -- just a gentle reminder to floss. I emerged from the chair smiling, despite 18 x-rays and scraping the heck out of my mouth, which it desperately needed. I appreciate that he does the cleaning himself: it gives him a chance to do really look and see what's going on and develop a patient-doctor relationship.
This is the dental practice where everyone knows your name. The hygenist, receptionist, biller, x-ray tech all ask you if you're doing okay, too warm, too cold, etc -- leading me to wonder if I'd stumbled upon a spa instead of a dentist. Hooray for Dr. Velasco and his staff!

I haven't visted the dentist in over 5 years. I've been hesitant since I had a feeling bad news was coming. I've got dental insurance so I figured I might as well use it. Yelp comes in to save the day...
I decided to go with Dr. Velasco and let me say that it was an excellent choice. The vibe of the office was very calm and relaxed. I felt very welcomed as soon as I walked in. I like the location of his office, offering a nice view of the other buildings in the area, and it's close proximity to public transport.
Dr. V is very knowledgable, friendly, and professional. He really knows how to break the ice and connect with his patients. He takes to time to explain what he's doing with what instrument and it's purpose. There were no surprises when during my checkup which was great. His staff is also very friendly and helpful too, showing me new brushing and flossing techniques (I learned something new!). I was fortunate enough to not have any cavaties, but I feel like I'll be changing my brushing habits thanks to Dr. V.
I'd recommend Dr. V to anybody who's looking for a good dentist in the city. Bring the kids too!

I rarely write reviews but Jeremy is great.
I had a chipped tooth, and no insurance, they got me an apointment straight away, Jeremy did a fantastic job with the chip, looks perfect, and the fee was very reasonable.
No fancy digital display screens etc. here, but really, do they need them? Just friendly, honest, accomplished, dentistry.
Can you ask for anything more?
My mouth has never been cleaner.
I called in an appointment 2 weeks ago for a cleaning and they got me in today.... I loved that.
Most dental offices are really friendly, but this staff goes the extra mile and then some to make sure you're taken care of. Dr. Velasco is incredible!
He and his staff are so kind and welcoming.
I just moved to the area and some how managed to chip my front tooth. Not a big chip but a teeny tiny chip, every one I know thought I was crazy for freaking out and feeling an overwhelming need to get it fixed immediately.
So I searched Yelp for a 5 star dentist and found Dr. Velasco! I am so happy I went to see him, he fixed my tooth in less than 20 minutes and totally took care of me.
I felt ridiculous because I was almost in tears when he told me it was such a small chip that the bond may not hold and he didn't think we should file my front tooth down(nor did I).Come on this is my front tooth, I could not leave a chip in it... He was so reassuring and he told me if there were any problems just come back and he would fix take care of it.
Guess what? My tooth looks great! Not too mention, I almost can't wait to get my teeth cleaned ;)

I just went to Dr. Velasco for the first time yesterday - and it was great! Thank you Yelp for finding me a dentist I can trust!
I've had bad experiences with my past two dentists. I was going to give up and pay out of pocket to go to my childhood dentist in Illinois, but after reading the Yelp reviews I went to Dr. Velasco first.
My teeth are cleaner than they have been in 5 years, I trust him when he tells me that I have one worrisome tooth to fill on my next visit, and my faith in the dental profession is renewed.
Plus, the entire staff is warm and friendly. Imaginary 6th star for them as well :)

An extremely nice, honest, and competent dentist. I don't know why he stands out so much just for being reasonable, but he's certainly the best dentist I've been too since I was a kid.
The one downside is that parking is a bit of a pain, but that's not the end of the world in the city...
Dr. Velasco is the best dentist ever! He's got lots of positive energy and and a good sense of humor too. And oh yeah, he's also great at what he does.
His staff is made up of some of the sweetest and kindest people you'll ever meet.
I think I'm actually looking forward to my next appointment, is that crazy or what?
I found him on yelp.
I called him, panicked, broke, and in dire need.
He took me in THAT VERY DAY.
His dental office was a home.
His assistants were like family.
Friendly conversation the whole examination through.
Was I really in a dental office? Wow.
Without insurance, it's going to be rough. But, he's cool about working out some sort of payment plan... He HAS to!
Cuz I cannot imagine letting anyone else take care of my teeth (and my anxieties).
Dr. Velasco is IT.
Trust.
Glad to meet Dr. Velasco for the first time today...I visit my dentist religiously (my mother is a dentist), and moved to SF 5 months ago... so it was time. Dr. V was friendly, conversational, and professional...he did a thorough cleaning job, and checked to make sure I was comfortable several times throughout the process.
I didn't bring my insurance card...his staff handled this with elan, looking up my number on-line, and then by phone. Friendly service, competent dentist, and a clean, comfortable office. Thanks Dr. Velasco!

I completely agree with Susan! This is a super friendly office. Dr Velasco, or Jeremy, mentioned all of his collegues by name and spoke highly of them all. He really enjoys what he does and is very helpful. He doesn't ever make you feel bad for things like not flossing (man I hate flossing). He's also very gentle, even when he warns you that it might not be gentle anymore (which I thought was awesome).
He likes to chat and talk about his daughter, she's got a little shrine as you walk in the door. Also, they take photos of new clients so that they can remember your face!

Wow! What a great guy who really knows his stuff. I have very good teeth, though it had been too long since I had seen a dentist. He ultra-sounded and scraped off all the plaque virtually painlessly. He also used the "sandblaster" to remove some small coffee and red wine stains which really helped as well. Without lecturing, he makes you understand why flossing is so important and not just brushing alone (kind of like having an airbag in your car, but you still should wear the belt, too).
I actually feared going back to the dentist, but Dr. Velasco made those thoughts unfounded. A bonus, at age 36, I still have no cavities!
I originally found Dr. Velasco on Yelp and the comments were so helpful in my decision. I second the top marks, but more importantly, I got a sense of the trust others had in him which made my choice easy. He is almost like a benevolent coach in that he wants you to have the best teeth you can, and strives to show you how in the most positive manner possible.

Dr. Velasco is extremely friendly and personable. He loves to talk to you while he's cleaning your teeth, which makes it quite difficult to uphold your end of the conversation, but somehow he understands every "ahh" and "uh huu" you say! There was no problem getting an appointment and they accept Delta dental insurance. His staff is also great and makes you feel comfortable the moment you walk in the door.
Update: I had my 6 month check-up and am excited as ever to bump Dr. Velasco up from 4 to 5 stars (i just had to be sure). He ran out of toothbrushes, which he was REALLY upset about, but made up for it by giving me 2, count em, 2 things of floss!
