Announced 5 weeks ago"Buying a mattress can be a nightmare..." - 2007 Consumer Buying Guide.
Who would've thought? I certainly didn't until it was time for us to buy a new mattress. It's not something you purchase often so I had no idea how much politics goes into it!
We weren't in a rush...just looking to buy an extra mattress for our place. We spent one whole Saturday going from store to store to store. I didn't mind that but what I didn't realize was how mentally draining it was because of all the bargaining you had to do with the sales people! It wasn't some $50 item that you could return if you weren't satisfied with it after you got home - it would be at least $1000 for what we wanted. The sales people we dealt with were pretty sleazy and some were even rude, telling us that the price on the display was the price we had to pay (which is NEVER the case for those chain stores!). By the time we went home that day, I was in a bad mood and had a massive headache. I didn't want to deal with mattress shopping EVER AGAIN.
Two weeks later, my husband suggested we visit Keetsa.
"What's that?" I asked.
"A new mattress store in SF" he replied.
Silence.
"Do we have to? I don't have the energy nor patience to deal with that this weekend..." I pleaded.
Luckily he convinced me to check it out and I am so glad we did!
The salesperson, Chris, was very informative upon finding out we weren't familiar with their company. I never felt that he was pushy in anyway and he even told me, "if you can't feel the difference, don't pay the extra cash for the more expensive mattress." Wow! Most salespeople would give you the whole "you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping in bed so why not get the best you can afford - you deserve it" speech.
After about 30 minutes, we decided to go with The Keetsa Cloud and bought it on the spot! We also purchased the mattress cover (that keeps dust mites out) and the frame that goes beneath it. I loved how Keetsa mattresses are all set at a low price and that we did not have to play the bargaining game and still walk away wondering if we got ripped off. They had two guys wheel out our purchase and load everything into the car for us! They were careful when moving and very friendly. We left Keetsa with the rest of the day free to do whatever we pleased because they made it so easy!
We had such a positive and pleasant experience shopping at Keetsa. We felt that the money was well spent not only because of the wonderful mattress but also because of the fantastic customer service. I even emailed all my friends and family to let them know about Keetsa!

I wanted to update having received a very nice email (excerpt below) from the business which gave more info on the Keetsa green credentials.
"We do not use harmful chemicals to make the beds fire regulation compliant. We use non toxic compounds such as glycerol and phosphate salts. We replace 12% of the petroleum with castor bean oil and have no detected VOC's and no formaldehyde. Our mattresses are compacted and we send out tons of mattresses with no delivery trucks. I am sure you can see how we are different from the traditional mattress store. Our latex mattress uses natural latex, organic cotton and wool for the fire barrier. "
I still think there are other 'greener' products out there, but my original one star seems unfair given the extra information they have provided.

I was researching for a new mattress and came across the Keetsa reviews on Yelp. But I have to say… Read more »
I went to Keetsa, did my homework. Not green, not even greenish. I wrote a very detailed review. Yelp pulled it stating I did not have first hand experience???
If you want a mattress in a box, search online using those words and you will find the same product for 1/2 price.
If you want natural non-toxic latex at an affordable price check out the local 'foam' dealers (my foam) or Organic Grace up in the Russian River area.
To educate yourself visit The Green Home center on Polk --- and no, I am not affiliated with anyone, just hate seeing folks being fooled by "eco-friendly".

Yes, this place is as good as the reviews say. My mattress is comfy, was cheaper than anything comparable, and of course the most fun was pulling it out of the box and jumping out of the way as it unfurled itself.
Yes, there is some degree of greenwashing here (the mattresses are made overseas and shipped in, after all), but these mattresses are still less toxic than any mainstream ones. This is a great compromise for someone who can't afford $10,000 for a locally made, organic cotton, hemp-infused pillowtop.
Read the fine print --- NOT Eco-friendly. More like a Superfund site with a leaf stuck on top.
The 'natural' foam is the petroleum-based chemical soup that is the same as all of the 'memory foam' including tempur-pedic. This crap out-gasses for decades and will be around longer than all of us.
True natural latex, also know as rubber - is the stuff from the tree (rubber tree) and is made using either the Dunlap or Talalay process. The Dunlap is more durable, and the talalay more 'pillowy'. Real natural (not synthetic) latex does not need to be dipped in green tea, wheat grass or silver --- bugs don't like it.
Keetsa is as money-hungry as the next creepy multi-national... in green clothing!
To learn about reputable companies check out the article at the National Geographic green pages - search on mattress.

First impression: nice web page, green product, I can take the mattress home in a box - how cool, nice staff, etc.
Then I read around the web a bit, and learned a bit more about memory foam and how it smells because of VOCs that get released in the air. With that, I re-read the Keetsa web page and noticed how it has been written by great marketers and lawyers. No false statements are made. Simply, just statements that if read quickly sound a lot better than if one actually knew a few more things about foam. The mattresses are "washed" in green tea to alleviate their smell (ouch!), although after a quick read one thinks "mattress + green team = natural". The mattresses are recyclable - nice but not natural. etc.
I didn't mind my Keetsa experience. The sales folks were nice, the mattresses felt pretty good, etc. But I do think that their whole green deal is a bit of a scam, albeit a very well orchestrated one, and it's kind of sad to see how the Keetsa sales guys are all into it and believe their own story.
In the end I may end up buying one of their coil mattresses, but I still don't like marketing scams.

We got a twin bed for our toddler as he transitions into his "big boy bed". It is such a comfortable bed! I end up sleeping on it part-time and it is great. The people at the Natural Mattress Store in San Rafael were very helpfull. Not thrilled about the fact that it is made in China, but I wasn't about to spend $2,500 for a twin organic mattress for my toddler. This one will work just fine for the next 8-10 years.
Keetsa is fantastic! Not only was this an exceptional buying experience but the mattress is awesome.
First the store/service: easy metered parking on 9th St., low key, nice music playing, essential oil atomizer wafting pleasant, not-to-strong scents and all their product line laid out ready for the testing.
Sleep Consultant, Chris comes over after giving me plenty of time to test and sits down to see if I have any questions. I do - and he has answers. Not canned answers but really useful ones.
We talk about the mattresses, the pillows, the way I sleep, the sheets (they are made from bamboo and feel like brushed silk!) and I'm all set on the Tea Leaf Supreme. Just need to go home and measure to decide between queen and king size. I said I'd be back Monday (this was Saturday) to purchase. I'm sure he's heard that before but there was no pressure to "buy now". So he wrote up the pricing - good deal on mattress, two pillows, protectors for all, and a set of sheets and I'm out the door smiling.
But I get home and measure and think - I could sleep on that tonight because the things are packed in an amazing shrink-wrapped way so I could go and put it in the trunk of my City CarShare - had for a couple more hours anyway and which was more important - my sleep or Trader Joes?
So I'm back at the store and Chris doesn't appear surprised. He is again completely pleasant and handles the transaction quickly and a few minutes later is helping me load it in the car.
I had been waking up several times a night and even my first night I slept right through. And it keeps getting better as your body adjusts to what is real comfort and support.
I'll tell everyone about Keetsa - and am glad my co-worker, Shadia, told me! Pass it on and get a good deal and great night's sleep.

One of the most impressive purchase experiences I've ever had. Both Chris and Andy are pretty much the bomb shit - exceedingly friendly (but not in that "And now, let me tell you all about my new business with AmWay" kinda way), knowledgeable and generally cool.
I love the fact that the company is based out of the Bay Area (Berkeley, woo hoo!), and I totally appreciate the emphasis on eco-friendly packaging and production. Yes, they may go a bit too far into hippy-dippy land for me with all the green tea, but that's Bezerkely for ya. I love green tea as much as the next guy, but I'm really more interested in what the damn mattress feels like and if it's gonna get filled with sweat and dust mites.
Not cheap, but as they say, you spend 1/3 of your life in bed (or a hell of lot more if you're like me).
I spent an hour in the store, checked out some other places like ESW and McRoskey. For the money, I think it's just a better mattress, and it does feel more comfortable than a Tempurpedic for a lot less cheddar.
Best of all? I walked in, bought a queen size with two pillows and associated "upgrade kit" accoutrement and planned on just hauling it three blocks down to my office. Oh-no! Not good enough to have it in stock, says Mr. Andy: "Here, take a hand cart. You can bring it back tomorrow."
Way too nice over there. The beds and the peeps. Five stars. Can't wait to get to bed.

I am so glad my dad decided to buy me an eco-friendly mattress for my new apartment!!! I was debating with him whether to just get a standard "commercial" mattress that meant supporting a typical money-hungry company or to get a healthy, environmentally-friendly mattress from a company that doesn't only care about making a buck, but that invests in the health of their customers with chemical-free mattresses and also that uses sustainable and recycled materials in their products. Andy was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and pressure-free and I got to buy my mattress on the day of my move-in and take it home the same night. It even fit into the back of my dad's Infinity I-35!! I've had a great night's sleep on my Keetsa mattress ever since I've gotten it and I highly recommend it above all other mattresses!!!

Excellent shopping experience (thank you Andy!), easy parking, and instant gratification. (I purchased a queen sized Tea Leaf Classic.) The box is fantastic, but fair warning - it may be a tight squeeze fitting it in *all* four door cars, depending upon the size of the mattress. The only downside would be if you have an existing mattress to get rid of you'll have to find your own way of disposing of it (I didn't have that problem, but most people do).
As expected with memory foam, there was a strong smell for the first 24 hours or so, which dissipated and is no longer noticeable.
Bought a keetsa mattress about a year ago, soon after they opened... loved the pitch: greentea oil and no chemicals, rolled up in smaller boxes so more mattresses could fit in a container, thus the much lower price... I got the $599 one, and maybe should've gotten the firmer one for a bit more, but frankly, this is the most comfortable mattress I've ever had. It took a few days to get used to it, cuz it's not like a spring mattress at all... I love going to bed! I always sleep well on it, and it was super great when I was having back problems too...

When I first moved to San Francisco, I got a uber-small but uber-expensive studio. On the 5th month, I said heck with it and decided to move. So I stopped buying new furniture to decorate it.
Issue was ... uh, I never got any furniture in the first place. Aero bed FTW!!
Anyway, after 3 months of moving into my awesome new place, the aero bed somehow got a nasty hole in it. Poor aero bed. May it rest in peace.
After seeing my living conditions, a friend dragged me out to a store to buy a bed. I put it together and slept in the middle ... Yes without the mattress on the hardwood floor. (Hmm, this story seems pretty sad but don't worry it gets better.)
After some more number of weeks of this madness, I fled work in the middle of the day and headed over to Keesta demanding a mattress.
The saleslady was pretty nice and explained the mechanics of mattressses. Zzzzz. At some point she figured out how desperate I was to get one. So desperate that she actually told me to wait for at least a week to make sure I was sure. "Research my investment" so she claimed. Bah! No way! I needed my mattress! So after some convincing, she conceded and asked her partner to check on the one I wanted.
Except they didn't have it in stock. Ugh.
Anyway, this story is way too long already. After a few more minutes, I just took the mattress that was a tad more expensive at some usual discount that mattress people give. Didn't even sit on it, looked good enough from afar.
The only thing was I had to drag it back to my place (on top of a hill) w/ no car. They called a taxicab for me. Thank you! Usually my last-minute desperate purchases have a sour ending. But this mattress? I love it still today. Nice and comfy! Definitely worth what I got it for.

I'll keep this review short ... and exceptionally sweet. I had the wonderful opportunity to experience a good friend's Keetsa mattress not too long ago. Suffice it to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the comfort of that mattress...
From every... possible... angle.
Ahem.
I won't get into specifics, but when it's time to replace my present mattress (which I thought was one of the best, but seriously pales in comparison to the Keetsa mattress), I'll head straight to Keetsa.
The Keetsa pillow was also to die for. Verrrrrry comfortable.
Yum.

I've never been compelled to write a review before, but I saw Keetsa on the home page and had to write one.
I currently reside in New York City & found Keetsa's website while looking for mattresses online for my new apartment. I wanted something made of quality materials but fairly inexpensive. After watching the video of the inflatable mattress, I convinced my friend to get the full-sized one also. We couldn't be happier! We've had our mattresses for nearly a year and are continually impressed by its durability and the comfort it provides us. We speak highly of the company's innovative product as well as the convenience of ordering and delivery to New York City from California.
So glad I ordered from Keetsa. I will continue to recommend it to all my friends!

My husband and I absolutely love Keetsa. We purchased our mattress from Keetsa about 9 months ago and it is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. In fact, I think the only bad thing about our Keetsa mattress is that it is so comfortable I rarely want to get out of bed in the morning. The salesman was exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful not to mention when we left we could fit our new mattress in the trunk of a cab. It was probably about the same price as a regular mattress maybe a bit less. Oh and they're eco-friendly to boot, what more can you ask for?
Needless to say I recommend Keetsa to anyone who is looking for a new mattress.

It was so easy buying a bed here. I went in with my toddler, a friend and left with a brand new bed that fit in the back of my car. There was a great salesperson who didn't make me feel like I was being pressured into buying something. And he was really nice and played with my son, which is an added bonus.
I also have a European Sleepworks bed, and I think they're pretty similar except that the Keetsa is a little bit squishier. But for the difference in price, it's worth that extra softness. I bought the cheapest model and didn't try out the higher end models, so maybe those are more comparable.

I purchased the Keetsa Plus mattress, it is their entry level product. Shipping was free, the mattress was well priced for the quality of products used to make it. Keetsa ships their mattress in a box, it's compressed and rolled up to fit. My mattress was slightly damaged during shipment, I emailed them that night about the problem. The next day I received an email back. The mattress was damaged, but it did not effect the performance, so Keetsa gladly gace me a discount off the total price. They also sent me a nice card with a gift certificate and some loose green tea.
Now for the actual product, wonderful mattress, sooooooo comfortable, soft and cushy, but at the same time complete support. If the entry level mattress is this good I can not imagine how nice the Tea leaf supreme models are. Overall great product, affordable, environmentally responsible, and excellent customer service.

Bought the Tea Leaf Supreme a month ago. Best mattress I've ever had. And I've had a lot. If you've always wanted Tempurpedic but were put off by a) the price or (like me) b) the feeling you are sinking into a swamp, Keetsa is a godsend. The "green" thing is great but whatever. Sleep (and extracurriculars) are too important to my sanity. If my mattress came from a factory where they fed unicorns to run the furnace, so be it. That said, it is nice for a yuppie prick like me to feel like I'm doing something halfway decent for environment.
Buying experience was great. Chris is helpful and honest. Don't try haggling with them because the prices are already more than fair. You can take the bed home same day and watching it expand is one of those moments that will take you back to your childhood as you wonder "HOW THE F*** DO THEY DO THAT?" (I was a foul-mouthed child).
There is no green tea in the mattresses. I don't know what put that in my head, though it would have been awesome. It smells weird the first few nights. If you have problems with body heat on the foam mattress, get a mattress protector from them...clear that right up. If you go to Sleep Train or wherever else, do yourself a favor and check Keetsa out. You won't be sorry.
(To those who think these guys are gaming Yelp...you are idiots. They just have a great product and a great sales team. They deserve their good ratings. Even though I think they run a unicorn slaughterhouse in the back. Which I'm totally cool with.....)

I wanted to post a glowing review of my Keetsa experience immediately upon purchasing a queen-sized Keetsa Cloud, but my boyfriend advised to wait and actually sleep on the bed first. I'm pleased to report that the mattress has lived up to the shopping experience.
Chris at the SOMA location was extremely helpful without being at all pushy. My boyfriend and I were mattress shopping after just moving to San Francisco. The process was daunting, especially because we'd left our vehicles behind. Upon learning that we were staying in a little hotel down the street, and planned to keep our mattress there overnight until moving into our apartment the next day, a helpful store staff member loaded our box onto a little dolly and walked back to our hotel with us - awesome! Not that we couldn't have managed it: Keetsa mattresses are miraculously packed into boxes half the size of a refrigerator box. The box fit snuggly into a taxi trunk the next day!
The mattress came to life beautifully after being unpacked. The Keetsa Cloud is a memory foam-type mattress that is lovely to sleep on. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is you should check Keetsa out if you're in the market for a new mattress!

Went with a friend who needed a mattress in a hurry. It was a quick and pleasant experience. It was easy to compare their well laid out line-up of about 8 or 10 different models. Within 30 minutes we had made our decision, had it IN to the car and were on our way home. Another 30 minutes later it was in the house and the bed was made.
They have an amazing way of packaging their mattresses into a box which has wheels and that made it a cinch to get it in and out of the car, then into the house. Very cool. Andy was the man who helped us, the ultimate non-salesman type of salesman all too rare - no pressure, was happy to answer questions and didn't hover as we hopped from bed to bed.
I have a European Sleep Works (in Berkeley) bed myself that has been the best bed I've ever slept on, but for the next purchase for myself (I'd rather have a King size) I'll definitely give Keetsa another look before automatically going to ESW (whose prices seem a fair amount higher, but is likely due to the material difference - using latex).
If my friend remains happy with the bed over the long term, then I'd likely consider raising the rating to 5 stars.

At first this place seemed like a dream come true - The sales staff is extremely nice, the concept is very hip, the prices are affordable. Well, when something seems too good to be true it usually is...
I was very impressed by the Keetsa store. The people who work there are very cool and laid back and there was no pressure at all. Plus they gave me free green tea. All was good until I left the store.
1. The box which holds the mattress fell apart in about 5 minutes. I solicited the help of my neighbor to help bring the mattress upstairs. I don't think he will ever talk to me again. I can't even begin to describe how annoying it was trying to carry this thing up a flight of stairs, the box was opening as we did it and the mattress was starting to inflate or whatever. What a mess.
2. From the moment the mattress was completely unrolled, I started to notice a funky smell coming from it. I called the store and they told me it was just cedar oil and green tea and that it would fade over time. It has been several months and the smell is still there. It is nauseating.
3. One of the reasons I bought this bed was because it was supposedly "eco-friendly". I've come to learn it is all an amazing marketing scheme! The memory foam used to make this mattress is actually extremely toxic and harmful to the environment. I wish I had done more research before buying this.
4. I have severe allergies, so I purchased an "organic/chemical free" bed cover which was not cheap. After I got it home and took it out of the box, I read the label on it. Uh, 100% polyester, MADE IN CHINA. Chemical free, YEAH RIGHT!
5. Something is very strange with this memory foam bed because every morning I wake up in a pool of sweat. It gets very hot and is uncomfortable. The sweat adds to the weird smell and now my whole studio smells like a musty sauna.
6. I have called the store a couple times to tried and return this bed, but they told me that I would have to bring it back into the store and they would charge me a re-stocking fee. First of all now that the bed no longer fits in the box, it won't fit in my car. I have no way to get it back there and it is just too much of a hassle.
7. The only reason I give this place one star is because the cute young man who sold it to me was so nice! After that the whole experience has been downhill....

Oh, what a wondeful place. You enter and they offer tasty tea and give you all the time in the world to test out their sweet beds. No pressure whatsoever. The beds are incredibly comfy, environment-friendly and very reasonably priced.
And saying that their service is good would be like saying that Mother Teresa was kinda nice. Their service is virtually unmatched. We worked with Chris and he was absolutely fantastic. He answered our questions when needed and left us to alone when we wanted to test out the beds.
If you're looking for a new bed, look no further than Keetsa.

This was such a relaxing way to make a significant purchase.
I walk into the store and there's one guy lounging on one bed, and another guy on a different bed. They were chatting, so I just assumed it was customers testing out the beds. It was actually the infamous Andy speaking with a customer. (I didn't figure that out until later) We said "Hi" then I proceeded to lay on a bed.
My boyfriend walks in, to what looks like an opium den I'm sure, everyone just laying on beds in a coma.
Andy was informative, not pushy and we walked out with a queen pillow top and frame. Still happy and LOVED that it was in a box, and that it was inexpensive. That was Dave's favorite - watching the bed unravel and fill up. Very liberating experience. It's kind of like a Chia Pet without the water... Not only are these guys the real thing, but their tea is as good as their attitude.....and I don't much like tea.
My daughter decided we needed a new queen guest room matress, and we dropped two grand on a new Sealy at Sleep Train, and it is very good, but she wouldn't go to Keetsa because she "never heard of them, and they have a funny name". So I went myself and ended up replacing my own queen matress with their second from the top model.
Boy, was she wrong. These guys couldn't have been nicer, and now that I've been on the matress for a month and a half, I can't imagine sleeping on anything else.
I am a retired stunt man and semi-retired BASE parachuting instructor who has broken everything but my ulnar nerve in forty years of skydiving. This matress is phenomenally great, and the people who sell it...at least on the store on 9th Street. They talked me out of the top model, gave me full and useful information on every single thing in the store, and had more patience with me than I have with my skydiving students....hell, they are only risking their lives, not a matress they will probably keep longer than their wives.
The matress cost less than the Sealy, fit in the back of my car, and works exactly as promised.....well, maybe even better. All phone calls after the sale were just as friendly and just as helpful.
Don't want to sound like a shill for them, but they really are nice, helpful, and the product is beyond description. Highest marks for them and their exceptional staff of professional non-professionals.

Yea! I have a comfy, comfy mattress. Buying it was easy - the salespeople at Keetsa were nice and helpful (but not at all pushy).
When I originally went in, I knew that I didn't want to buy a mattress that day. With the encouragement of the sales staff, I tried all of the mattresses in the store. When I was done, they gave me a brochure and wrote down my favorite. No pressure to buy that day at all.
When I came back to buy the bed, I wanted to try the mattresses again (hey, its a big purchase for me!). But, I left a very satisfied customer. I would absolutely recommend Keetsa - not just for the comfy mattress, but also for the great buying experience I had.
I heart our new mattress from Keetsa. Everything about this store is great - their eco-friendly approach, packaging, the fact that you can stick a huge mattress in the back of your car...altogether lovely. Luckily we picked up our comfy new bed, Keetsa was offering a gift card to Whole Foods or BART as an extra incentive. Yipee.
stop #2, heard about it on Yelp! I see they are a sponsor so that makes me a little leery. But we go, and ... they have a great niche at the right time. Green mattresses, recyclable. Wife likes the foam-blend Tea Leaf Classic. We want to buy it. But our bed's an antique full and it won't hold the mattress.
They do offer a spartan metal platform here, but we couldn't decide if that's what we wanted. So keep looking. . . but Andy is great. When we figure out what to do about the bed, we'll be back.

I am really amazed by all the positive reviews here for keetsa mattresses claiming that the mattresses are eco-friendly. I was in the market for a healthy alternative to standard polyurethane mattresses and decided to check out keetsa.
I went on their website and noticed that the mattresses are made principally of . . . memory foam!!! That's a polyurethane, oil-based product, and terribly eco-harmful. It's true that Keetsa adds "tea" leaves and a few other natural ingredients to the memory foam, but come on, that doesn't make the product green. I was sure that I was missing something, so I went to the SF store to ask about it, and they confirmed that the mattress is principally made up of memory foam.
So what is the deal? Keetsa can take credit for doing a little bit to make mattresses less harmful to the environment (like trying to recycle some -- how much? -- of its materials), but to claim that it is selling eco-friendly mattresses is -- let's call a spade a spade -- a lie.
So here's the mystery: What are all these positive reviews doing on Yelp? I see two options: Alot of these reviews are from friends of the owners, or alot of people are easily misled by marketying hype. Probably both.

We went there on Saturday after my husband found it online and liked what he saw.
Andy the sales guy was great, explained all the mattresses to us, listened to my bad back story, and then left us to decide.
We bought a queen size bed and frame and it all fit into the back of the Volvo station wagon.
Mattress set up was sooo easy and the great thing was when we opened the packaging no noxious fumes!
Anyone looking for a new mattress needs to go here!!
Keetsa brings an eco-friendly, sustainability orientation to sleep products with amazing new items such as mattresses, pillows, toppers that deliver comfort night after night. Keetsa also brings safer sleep environments by using everyday, natural ingredients that deliver anti-bacterial benefits. These products come together in one of the most efficient business models that produces a much lower carbon foot print than typical mattress stores...and every day cost savings to consumers in the range of 50% to 75%.
I love this store, because they have their entire business model posted on the wall- there's nothing left up to the imagination. keetsa.com

This is a shout out to Chris and Joseph for customer service!
I needed a lot of really big pieces of cardboard and I wanted to re-use boxes if I could rather than buying new ones. So I started calling around the city. I managed to get a hold of Chris before their boxes headed to recycling for the day, and he held them for me. Even though I wasn't a customer (if I were shopping for a mattress, I would definitely stop by there again), Chris and Joseph helped me get the boxes into my car, but not before extracting a promise from me that after I'm done using these boxes, I'd recycle them. I don't know, I thought that was cool.
