"Just got home from the A-1 Smoke Shop and I'm way excited! I walked in with the intention of buying a hookah for a much higher price than I…" read more »
Bought a bunch of filters here since they have almost every size possible.
The first smoke shop on Haight and it's not even close to Ashbury at all. This makes it awesome because not too many tourists come in and stare at all the crazy bongs like in others. Got recommendations on vaporizers here and they even gave me a free bic lighter when I bought my first bong. They do keep out anybody under 18 which is good because there's just so much glassware around.
I'd definitely keep coming here with my friends to buy random stuff during those random hours of the day.
The prices on the water pipes are very fair and they sell a wide variety. They have a good selection of essences that smell great! This place was recommended to me by a couple of my friends who frequent here. The employees here are either shy or simply aren't that friendly as other smoke shops but they at least know what they are talking about after you flag them down.
Tragedy struck when I bumped into my water pipe, Long Bong Silver, while vacuuming. Old Silvy was able to withstand the shock and awe but the mouth piece did not survive.
I remembered I had picked him up at Pipe Dreams and now had to make a return trip. A trip to the Haight you say - sounds like a treat and not a chore. The girl at the counter was really helpful and I was able to patch up LBS on the cheap.

I laughed for a good hour on that one - in fact I'm still laughing at that one. I had to empty my pockets for him on that one. Too good.

It comforts me to know that I can walk down Haight Street a couple of years from now and this place will probably still be around.
One of SF's oldest smoke shop - Pipe Dreams has been open for over 27 years selling a slew of pipes, hookahs, and more.
Sometimes I'll even go out of my way to just buy a simple lighter in here; making sure I do my part to keep this Haight street 'landmark' around for another 27.

I've bought a lot of stuff here. SF's first smoke shop! The have a lot of small and mid priced pipes here, so it's good if you're looking for something discreet. They also have good deals on accessories, such as glass filters, grinders, jars, and other 420 lifestyle accessories.
They staff is always very nice and helpful and never pushy.
Staff is really friendly and they have a huge selection. Not to mention great pipes! Unfortunately, the pipe of our dreams was forgotten in our rush to get out the door. My boyfriend was really worried because we didn't realize we had forgotten the paid for merchandise until we got home (san jose). By the time we called the shop they were closed! We called back first thing the next morning and the girl who had helped us the night before knew exactly who we were and had our pipe safe and secure. We picked it up later with no problem.
Thanks so much pipe dreams for looking out for your customers!

I hate hippies but this place has the selection. It's almost like a gun store in its illegality (can I say that?)

Newsflash! There are shops on Haight St. that sell paraphernalia for the sole purpose of smoking marijuana! Shocking, I know.
Pipe Dreams touts itself as "San Francisco's oldest smoke shop." It certainly has that "I remember when Nixon was in office" feel to it. Anyway, there's probably everything you'll ever need (except for weed) to become a hopelessly, all-consumed pothead never to be a productive member of society again. If this sounds good to you, head on over and load up on smoking devices, lava lamps, nag champa and tie-dyed Hendrix T-shirts.
Oh, and in related news, if you're walking down Haight St. and some dude says to you, "Buds?" he's not offering to be your friend.

even though they only carry generic shit, i do kind of like this place...
+they're helpful when you ask them dumb questions (i don't even know why they didn't laugh at my stupidity... silly stoner rita)...
+they carry all pyrex "water pipes" (the legal term for bong)...
+they have a cute cat that is supposedly mean, but has always been friendly towards me... but then again all animals tend to like me... i'm special like that.
so yeah, this place is pretty cool... but i'm still not that into the smoke shops in sf... especially around haight street... call me spoiled, but i do like to have a variety to choose from... not just the same generic pipe, bubbler, bong, etc. that all these smoke shops carry.
travel north if you feel like being adventurous

My ex boyfriend, who hates me with the burning passion of a thousand suns, works here. If you hate me too, this would be a good place to commiserrate. He's got some dirt on me.
I prefer ETOH to THC, so this store is useless to me but the stuff is okay.
If they're ignoring you and you want to get the employees' attention, compliment whatever obscure music is playing. Seriously - music is the only thing they care about and it is the only thing that will get them interested in you.

My favorite place in the world to buy a glass pipe to smoke marijuana out of. A good place to buy bongs also.
I don't know anything about pipes or tobacco or anything related but I do know good service and good selection and that's what I got! The folks there at Pipe Dreams were SO nice, NO pressure, LOTS of patience and lots more diverse selection of pipes than the few other places I tried. They said they get new merchandise every week so if you don't find what you like, try and try again!
Great selection of glass pipes and nice people. I got my first piece here and fell in love with it.

this place is definitely legit. i went here a few months ago with a friend who was walking in to buy a new piece. the salesman was really nice to him and gave him great service.
i went here the other day for some of my own needs, and the same guy as well as a woman were both super nice and helpful with advice. even though they seem super intimidating, don't be scared to ask them questions. they know a lot without being super pretentious. just don't act like a total dumbass when you walk in there and you'll be fine.
Ironically, the oldest smoke shop in the Haight - located on the mostly residential stretch east of Masonic - is a legitimate and quite respectable purveyor of pipes, with one of the most extensive collections - ranging from bargain-basement glass models to $1,000 hand-carved beauties - at your disposal. They also sell a wide array of cigars, and this non-smoker found the staff to be extremely helpful when I wanted to buy some as a gift for stogie-sucking friends. Mixed in with cigarette lighters and cases, incense holders, posters, jewelry, and T-shirts, you'll find bongs and hookahs, no doubt for those who view them simply as objets d'art and want to display a piece of Summer of Love memorabilia on their coffee tables when friends drop in for a visit.
